It sounds like you have some issues with multiple plugins/extensions in
Firefox conflicting with one another, or at least with torbutton.

True, this is a nomenclature issue.  Our configuration of privoxy and
polipo run on the same ports, so what that checkbox really means is
"point http and https at tcp port 8118".
